THE FOLLOWING NOTES ON JOHN AND HANNAH  (and the picture above) WERE PROVIDED BY THE WIFE OF A DESCENDANT, LINDA MC DOWELL:

According to Hannah Carson, her husband, John Carson, Jr.'s cousin was Kit Carson (Christopher Carson 1809 - 1869), the hunter trapper & scout.

In the 1900 Greene Co., Census, he was a farmer who owned his farm.
John was listed a Jr. in the marriage records of Greene Co., Illinois.
He was a red-haired Irishman, cattleman and horseman who helped start the Presbyterian Church in Greenville, Illinois.
He, his wife, and his wife's 3 brothers each owned a quarter of a "section" (640 acres) in Greene Co., Illinois.  They would buy a car load of cattle in St. Louis, feed them with corn they had raised and resell them when they were ready for market.

In about 1919 he mortgaged his Greene County property to buy a ranch near Dexter, New Mexico which had well water and a huge windmill.  Three gallons of water came up on one stroke.  The water was stored in a big pond that had carp in it.  After great success raising cattle, he tried raising sheep.  Many sheep were killed by the bitter winter and/or disease.  The venture proved unprofitable  The sheep bones made a pile a city block long.

The cause of death on John Carson, Jr.'s death certificate was cerebral apoplexy.  He is buried in Hagerman, New Mexico.

Hannah Zink told a grandson of going down into the Carlsbad Caverns of New Mexico in a bucket lowered by ropes, before it was a National Park.  After she was widowed, she moved to Roswell, New Mexico.
